about us

Founders

Michelle and Kaylem Arteaga founded Trek Counseling in July 2019 with the goal of addressing the mental health crisis in Utah. Originally from Southern California, the Arteaga’s have been married for 20 years and have raised five children in Utah. They were motivated by the growing mental health challenges in their state and community, particularly the shortage of mental health resources. Trek Counseling, a community mental health outpatient clinic, focuses on providing care for families and individuals, with a special emphasis on teen mental health. Since its inception, Trek Counseling has expanded rapidly and now operates five office locations in Utah County and Salt Lake County, becoming a vital resource for those in need of mental health support.

WHY TREK?

A trek is a long and challenging journey—much like life itself. Each person’s lifespan, from infancy to late adulthood, represents a unique and personal trek, shaped by experiences, challenges, and growth.

At Trek Counseling, we honor and assess each client’s individual journey through a life span perspective (Lerner, 2002). This approach recognizes that human behavior is influenced by developmental processes across biological, historical, sociocultural, and psychological factors from conception to death. By understanding the complexity of each person’s trek, we provide meaningful support and guidance tailored to their unique path.

At Trek Counseling, we believe that life’s trek, while challenging, is also meant to be enjoyed. Every experience—both personal and familial—offers opportunities for growth and learning. Setbacks are not just obstacles but stepping stones for self-exploration and progress on one’s mental health journey. We embrace the idea that each person’s trek is unique, and through support and insight, we help individuals navigate their path with resilience and purpose.

Trek Counseling's Mentoring Program strives to enhance the academic, social, and emotional growth of youth in our communities, through meaningful connections with carefully selected adult mentors. We accomplish this by recruiting, training, and supporting mentors to support youth. We work in collaboration and partnerships with the State of Utah, Department of Human and Health Services, and our Utah School Districts.
